Screen time & brain development

In our modern culture, it seems we always have a screen in front of us.  It takes a conscious effort on our part to unplug from our phones, tablets, computers, and TVs.

There is a rapidly growing body of well-done scientific research that shows the effects of screen time on the development of a child’s brain, and the results are a bit frightening.

A recent study by the National Institutes of Health found that kids who spend more than two hours a day on screen time activities score lower on language and thinking tests. And kids who spend more than seven hours a day on screens show a thinning of the brain’s cortex, which manages critical thinking and reasoning.

In a recent study (June 2021), one researcher states,

“Children with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) are at increased risk for many of the negative effects of screen time. As part of the ASD syndrome, they already exhibit many of the behaviors that are associated with high screen use. Exposure to screens has the potential to heighten these behaviors. ..children with ASD are likely to experience greater negative effects from screens.”
